Ketchup, Mustard or Salad Dressing?

There are some salad dressings that you can buy that have reasonable calories, fat content, and natural ingredients including tasty spices. Many store bought salad dressings, however, have a lot of calories and a lot of fat, or you can buy the low calorie, low fat versions with some very interesting ingredients.

You can make your own salad dressing. You can find good recipes on the web or in cook books.

But, I find that putting some mustard on lettuce or cooked root vegetables works well in place of salad dressing. I like honey mustard which has mustard seed, some honey and turmeric. (And not much sugar.) Sometimes I use organic ketchup  (without high fructose corn syrup). Some hummus is also is a great salad dressing substitute. (And mixing hummus or honey mustard with beans is really good, too.)
Enjoy!

Electric Cars and Battery Switching

Electric cars have become an interesting addition to the choices that consumers have when deciding on which car to buy.Positive attributes for the cars include no emissions (like gas and hybrid cars), simpler engines and less maintenance. The cars can even be charged by plugging them into a household outlet.

One drawback with electric cars has been that you can’t drive very far on the charged batteries. And the batteries add a considerable amount to the cost of the cars.

Better Place (an Israeli company) has sought to solve these problems. You can still charge your car’s batteries at home, but for a monthly membership, you can also have access to stations (like gas stations) that you can pull into when on the road and have your car’s batteries removed and a fully charged set of batteries installed in your car. Additionally, as battery technology improves, Better Place can have these new improved batteries waiting for you at the “Battery Switch Stations”.
The key then is to have enough battery switching stations through-out the country that drivers can pull into to have the batteries changed. Several countries have already begun trying this strategy.

Sounds pretty cool to me.

My Heart

I listened to my heart.
I heard this beautiful melody.
My heart beating rhythmically.
My heart beating.
My heart singing the song it sings everyday, even when I am not listening.
My heart keeping me alive.

How grateful I am to have a heart.
How grateful I am that even when I am not thinking of my heart, it is thinking of me.
How grateful I am to have a heart.
How grateful I am to have this moment to live, and hopefully I will have the next moment and the next and the next moment to be grateful.
How grateful I am to be.

Documentary: Houston We Have a Problem

I am someone who is a supporter of green forms of energy. I just viewed the documentary, Houston We Have a Problem. “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Cheap Energy.”

It looks at the history of oil usage in this country and how our energy consumption and needs have set the stage for our foreign policy. It discusses green sources of energy. For example, it shows a US military base that uses photoelectric energy for 1/4 of its power.

We all play a role in changing our environmental impact on our world and also our state of dependence on other lands. What will happen if foreign governments stop the flow of oil to this country? How can we move toward greener forms of energy, such as solar, wind, biofuel, photoelectric, etc. Why are we not leading the green energy revolution? This is an insightful video and I recommend it. It made me see things differently and more clearly.

Check-out the trailer on YouTube.

Have a good day.

Grey’s Anatomy in the Future

Last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy  was what I might call the “What If” episode. What if things had been different for the characters? What if they had made different choices? (ex. chosen different relationships.) What if Meredith’s mother hadn’t died? The episode could be characterized as It’s a Wonderful Life-esque. I like this kind of stuff; I like imagining possibilities.

So, I think it would be cool to have an episode of Gray’s Anatomy that envisions the characters 15-20 years in the future. It would be cool to see how the show would make the actors look and to see the paths that the show’s writers would choose for the characters.

A Few other Ideas while I have your attention:

(1) You’ve heard of James Bond. How about a “Jane Bond” movie.
(2) StarTrek 3rd Generation. I guess they can’t call it “3G”-already taken.
(3) StarTrek Distant Future. And I mean really distant!
(4) Seinfeld at Camp. Imagine that the characters had met at day camp when they were kids.

And if they want me to have a part in any of these shows, I would certainly consider it.

Hope you have a good day.

Book: 10-10-10: A Life Transforming Idea

I am currently reading the book, 10-10-10: A life Transforming Idea by Suzy Welch.  The book is based on the idea that before making a decision, you consider the consequences of your decision in 10 minutes, 10 months and 10 years. This gives you a blueprint for seeing things from several different perspectives, prior to making the decision. Ms. Welch discusses how she discovered this approach, how it has helped her and how to put this approach into action. She gives  numerous examples of how this process has successfully helped many people to make important decisions concerning relationships, career, money, etc.  The author talks about ways to discover your values and your dreams and how to use these values and dreams when making decisions. I like the book and am trying to apply the method to my life. Check-out: www.suzywelch101010.com/

Quinoa for Breakfast

I really like Quinoa!

Easy to make and tasty.

I have been having organic quinoa and organic oatmeal with soymilk, ground flaxseeds, and cinnamon for breakfast.

I also really like Chia Seeds.

Enjoy.

Some key ideas that I have seen in a number of books on health, weight loss and nutrition:

(1) Eat calorie sparse foods but nutrient dense foods. When you eat a chocolate bar or even a nutrition bar, they have calories concentrated in “small packages.” You can eat this quite fast and still feel hungry and you have eaten lost of calories. Compare this with eating a salad with lots of vegetables. To get the same amount of calories, you would need to eat a lot more salad . The salad has lots of nutrients, but is calorie sparse. And the size of the salad will fill up your stomach and make you feel full. Additionally, it takes longer to eat the salad than a candy bar, so this also gives you body the chance to register the “I have eaten and I feel full” signal. See the Book: Eat To Live by Joel Fuhrman, MD.

(2) Eat slowly and more mindfully (pay attention/savor the foods) See the Book: Eating Mindfully: How to End Mindless Eating and Enjoy a Balanced Relationship with Food by Susan Albers

(3) Exercise

(4) Practice relaxation, meditation, guided imagery, Tai Chi, Yoga, Qigong, Breathing Exercises, etc.

(5) Decrease consumption of animal products. Eat more plant foods. Look at books, such as Eat To Live, The China Study, Healthy at 100, etc.

(6) Don’t overeat. See for example, The Life-Transforming Diet By David J. Zulberg. Smaller dishes= smaller portions= better for you.

(7) Don’t buy the junk food that you binge on and can’t stop eating. I use this one.

Book: The Kind Life

Should You Add More Vegetarian Meals to Your Diet? Be A Vegan? Do Your Food Choices Make an Impact on the Environment? Looking for Some Vegetarian Recipes? Do You Want to Make a Conscious Decision? Do You Want to Eat Healthier Foods? Do You Want to Learn About Foods You May Never Have Heard About? Alicia Silverstone, actor and vegan, has written, The Kind Life.  The book discusses her views on being a vegan and the larger societal context of the way we treat animals,  and how our food choices impact the environment and our health.

As someone who is edging closer to being a vegetarian, I found the book to be great.  But, the the book  is useful for anyone looking to add more vegetarian/vegan meals to their diet, by showing simple steps to take to achieve this. And for those wishing to go vegan, the book will serve you well. Check-out the recipes and the suggestions for substitutions in recipes.

Additionally, the author discusses her views on being a vegan and the impact on our lives and the world. This is good because whether or not you share this point of view, we all need to make conscious decisions.  The book also  profiles health pioneers who espouse similar viewpoints and other’s living “the kind life,” such as a body builder who is a vegan.

For me, I found the book really helpful because it introduced me to a host of different foods that I knew little about, as well as recipes to incorporate these foods and foods that I currently eat.

So, whether you are looking to go vegan or just to add some more vegetarian meals to your diet, whether you agree or disagree with the views expressed in the book, or just want to make conscious decisions, the Kind Life is a realy good book to check-out.

WaterCress & Pea Shoots I recently started eating WaterCress. I bought a hydroponically grown one that still had its roots intact. It is great; it has a spicy flavor and I really like it. I bought it at Whole Foods. I think a hydroponically grown product can be a good alternative if you can’t find an organic product or the organic product is too expensive.

And I have been eating Pea Shoots. I like them, too. I get them from Trader Joe’s. Organic and Yummy.

I Found these website via a google search: www.watercress.com and www.peashoots.com.

A few other products that I have been eating are ground flaxseeds, organic pure cocoa, cinnamon, chia seeds, ginger, and been making some cool tea mixes.

I guess, “Go Green” has a dual meaning.
