This season, while walking through the park with your cup of coffee in hand, admire the vibrant orange and red hues against the azure sky, then mirror those colors in your look. Mimic the crisp weather with halcyon shades of deep blue, copper and buttery cream. Look to the changing leaves for inspiration when applying brilliant shades of coppery brown and auburn red. Gluten Free Cosmetics: gluten free, natural color cosmetics including lip gloss, lipstick, foundation and eye liner.

Afterglow Cosmetics is 100% Gluten Free
Why did we make ALL our products gluten free? We have a very personal story behind our gluten free products. Creating fabulous, gluten free makeup is a personal mission for Afterglow Founder, Kristin Adams’ who’s mother and sister both have Celiac Disease and must avoid all things containing gluten – including cosmetics and personal care products. She has watched them struggling for years to find truly natural and gluten free cosmetics. When Afterglow Cosmetics was born, naturally, Kristin made sure that none of the ingredients used to formulate her line of cosmetics contained gluten. Are your gluten free cosmetics made in a gluten free facility? Our gluten free cosmetics are made in a 100% gluten free facility.

Why is it important for someone with Celiac Disease to avoid gluten laced make-up? Celiac Disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have Celiac Disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten is found mainly in foods but may also be found in everyday products such as shampoo, medicines, vitamins, and lip balms, lipstick and other make-up. It’s said that the average woman ingests up to four pounds of lipstick over a lifetime. Many lipsticks, lip gloss and lip balm available today currently contain wheat based ingredients that could negatively affect the stability and health of someone with Celiac Disease when ingested. All of Afterglow’s products are 100% gluten free. We have countless customers with Celiac Disease that do react to the gluten in their body care and makeup products. These customers have found that Afterglow is the only brand they can safely wear without a reaction. If you have Celiac Disease, you may think that the ingredients in your cosmetics won’t affect you. They may or may not. The real question is, why wouldn’t you switch to a line of  cosmetics that is beautiful, all natural, good for your skin, good for your body, and, (just in case!) gluten free?

Why would wheat be in my cosmetics anyway? Gluten derived cosmetic ingredients are common in many cosmetics. Gluten is found primarily in wheat, but also in rye, malt, oats and barley. These gluten cosmetic ingredients are used in cosmetics as binders to help the ingredients stick together and are also used as emollients in the form of  gluten derived oils. Celiac Disease and gluten intolerance are primarily an issue related to the auto-immune system of the intestines. However, much of what we put on our skin goes in. For a person suffering with celiac disease and the inability to digest gluten, even minor contact with gluten laced cosmetics could possibly contribute to discomfort. This may be even truer when one takes into consideration that many lipsticks on the market contain gluten as a cosmetic ingredient. This is a sobering thought for  a women suffering with gluten intolerance when it is said that the average women eats pounds of lipstick over a lifetime. So, why not make it edible and gluten free at the same time?
Afterglow Cosmetics is 100% gluten free…
If I don’t see the word ‘gluten’ on my cosmetics’ labels, does that mean that they are gluten free? Many gluten based ingredients used in cosmetics are not listed as “gluten’ on the ingredient label. We suggest that you purchase your products from reputable companies that communicate that they understand what gluten and Celiac Disease are and thoroughly communicate their commitment to providing gluten free products. Click here for a full list of wheat and gluten based cosmetic ingredients to avoid.  Your cosmetics contain Vitamin E. I thought that Vitamin E (tocopherol) was primarily sourced from wheat? Yes, most Vitamin E found in cosmetics is derived from wheat sources and contains gluten. Many manufacturers may not even know what their Vitamin E actually comes from. Afterglow Cosmetics sources only gluten free ingredients and uses Vitamin E (tocopherol) derived from organic cotton seed oil and organic olive oil…”(-from the afterglow cosmetics website/my emphasis)

♥Afterglow Eye Shadow Trios

Q: What Trios would look best with my eye color?

A: If you have blue eyes try: The Fire Trio, The Sauna Trio, The Calm Trio, The Relax Trio
If you have green eyes try: The Indulge Trio, The Relax Trio, The Wind Trio
If you have brown eyes try: The Earth Trio, The Water Trio, The Renew Trio

Q: What do I do with 3 shades?
A: Start by applying your highlight color. Apply the palest color in your Trio to your brow bones, right under the arch of your eyebrows. For extra pop add a bit of highlight into the inside corners of your eyes. Highlighting these areas make your eye seem bigger and wider set.
Next, apply you lid color using our Oval Eye Shadow Brush or Sponge Tip Applicator. Using your medium shade, apply the eye shadow all over your eye lid. This color will make your eye “pop.”

Finally, apply your crease shade. Apply the darkest color of your trio to the crease of your eyelid and blend well. Use our Crease Brush to add this soft lowlight in the arch of your eye lid crease. This gives your eye depth.” (from 3/6/09 Afterglow Cosmetics E-newsletter)

♥Teen Girls: What’s in Their Makeup? A test performed by the Environmental Working Group detected 16 different chemicals from 4 chemical families – phthalates, triclosan, parabens, and musks – in blood and urine samples from 20 girls ages 14-19.

“These tests feature first-ever exposure data for parabens in teens, and indicate that young women are widely exposed to this common class of cosmetic preservatives, with 2 parabens, methylparaben and propylparaben, detected in every single girl tested,” writes Rebecca Sutton, Ph.D.,  and staff scientist at the Environmental Working Group. In fact of the 20 teens tested, there was an average of 13 hormone-altering cosmetics in their bodies!

Other figures from this study showed that the teen study participants used an average of 17 personal care product a day while the average woman uses just 12 products daily. But what exactly is the potential harm of using so many of these product containing the above mentioned chemicals? Research has found these chemicals to be potentially cancer causing and disruptive to natural hormones and may affect normal gender development and fertility at a particularly vulnerable time in a woman’s life.

There is a pro-active use for this information. Mothers can teach their daughters the technique of reading cosmetic ingredient labels, just as they would pass on the secret to applying blush. We can all let other women who are interested know there are safer cosmetic alternatives out there. Most powerfully, we can start by taking care of ourselves.
