Great Weight Loss Solution

Check-out “Crave One Add Two” from Prevention.com. It is one of my favorite simple ways to lose weight.

And it is not a gimmick.

Basically, when you eat, including snacks, you eat 3 things, one of which is a protein. Check out the article. Originally, a nutritionist wanted her clients to eat more variety. But, when they tried this, they also lost weight.

Cancer Resources and Prevention

A while back, I viewed the movie, Crazy Sexy Cancer,  by Kriss Carr. I thought it was really interesting;  she changed her lifestyle to survive cancer. (She also fell in love and married her  cameraman. Cool!) (I think I should make a movie on a different subject; I will need a camera-women! LOL.)

A really memorable statement that she makes is, Food is your Medicine. I have been keeping this in mind as I try to improve my own diet. If I am willing to  pay $5 for a desert, I certainly can pay a bit more for better quality and healthier foods.

Kriss Carr has also written books and has a website and blog.

Additionally,  I really like the book, Anticancer,  by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD. The author, also a cancer survivor, has written about foods and habits that can help one to survive cancer or prevent it. An updated edition has just recently been released.

And I really like the book, Healthy at 100, by John Robbins. It looks at the diets and habits of the longest living peoples on Earth. (See also,  The Blue Zones, by Dan Buettner and www.bluezones.com)

Cold Hands and Feet

These days, my fingers have been quite cold. I bought an inexpensive Temperature Biofeedback device.

You take the digital thermometer (looks like a small clock) and it has a a cord. One end of the cord hooks into the thermometer and the other end of the  cord has a sensor that you tape to your finger.  As you relax, more blood flows to the area and your fingers warm-up. The machine doesn’t do it, you do it!
It is really cool as you watch the temperature rise as your fingers warm-up.  And though I have only used it a few times, my fingers seem to stay warm for an extended period of time.

I also think that using imagery can be helpful. Imagine your fingers or toes soaking in warm water or similar imagery.

The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone

The Book,  The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet by Alicia Silverstone, has just been released.  (See Also Her Website: www.TheKindLife.com) You will recognize the author from her movies. She is a Vegan, eating no animal products.

The book provides arguments/evidence for becoming a vegan and it has recipes for vegan cooking.  Additionally, it looks at the environmental and social impact of carnivorous eating, while mentioning  different doctors who have been pioneers in researching dietary change and health.

I really like this book  because I am trying to learn more about vegetarian eating and edging closer and closer to becoming a vegetarian.  Additionally, I found it really useful to learn more about foods that I am not so familiar with, such as tempeh, and how to prepare it.

Even if you aren’t trying to become a vegan or vegetarian, I think you will find the book useful to help you add more vegetarian meals, fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your menu; a recommendation that is widely given by even mainstream health advocates. Small changes, over time, can make a big difference.

Starting to Relax

It only takes a moment to start on the path of relaxation.  A moment of paying attention to your breathe,  and you have taken that step. To meditate, you focus on something (a word, a sound, your breathing, etc.) and when your mind wanders, you just return your focus back to your focus object.

I think if we incorporated meditation and similar techniques into our health care system, we would be healthier and happier.

For more information, see  http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=7392433 (from ABC News, an interview with Herbert Benson, MD and see his books, The Relaxation Response, etc.)

The Alexander Technique

I went the other day for a session of the Alexander Technique.  It begins with the importance of where the head and spine meet. The idea is that we need to get out of our way and let the bodies natural balance  re-emerge.  It is great for posture, but also learning to sit, stand, move in a way that reduces the stress on your bones, spine and joints.  It is used by Actors, Dancers, Musicians, Sufferers of Back Pain and Many Others.

These days, green (Earth-Friendly) products are quite popular.  But, are the products that are being sold, really “green?”

Weight Loss and Healthy Eating

One of the easiest ways to lose weight that I have found, comes from the article at Prevention.com called,  “Crave One, Add Two,”  written by Selene Yeager. (The article is based on the ideas of Karen Beerbower, RD and her book,  Setting Places.)

Basically, whenever you eat you have three things, one of which must be a protein.  This includes when you decide to snack and when you decide to go back for seconds. The only exception is that you may have desert within 15 minutes of a meal.  So, let’s say you have a snack of some yogurt (protein) and crackers and some apple. You want more crackers; however, you must also have more the other components, one which must be a protein.

The nutritionist who started this said she did it to encouragee her clients to eat more variety. But, she found they also started losing weight by following this.

I found this really helpful and a good way to plan a meal.

Here is the link for the article on Prevention.com  http://www.prevention.com/cda/article/crave-one-add-two/aecf68f271903110VgnVCM10000013281eac____/weight.loss/strategies.for.success/diet.basics

Hope this helps!

Back, Neck or Muscle Pain

I am not in the medical profession, but several years ago, as a result of musculoskeletal problems and pain, I went to a physical therapist who was also a Feldenkrais Practitioner. It was really helpful to me. So, if you are experiencing neck pain, back pain or other musculoskeletal problems, you might look into the following: The Feldenkrais Technique, The Alexander Technique, Trager Work, and Techniques done by Doctors of Osteopathy.
